George Morrison: The Magical City at The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art presents a groundbreaking exhibition exploring how George Morrison (Grand Portage Chippewa, 1919–2000) became a leader of the Abstract Expressionist movement. Born in a remote Native American village on Lake Superior, Morrison traveled to New York City in 1943, where he formed meaningful connections with artists including Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, and Lois Dodd. This exhibition features 25 of his most important paintings and drawings from his early New York period, culminating in his celebrated Horizon series.

As one of the founding members of the legendary Tanager Gallery and a key participant in New York's 1950s avant-garde scene, Dodd developed a distinctive approach to painting that captures the quiet poetry of everyday subjects—window views, seasonal changes, simple interiors—with extraordinary clarity and restraint.
