Carlos Matul

Carlos Matul (b. 1991) is a Guatemalan artist based in New York. He graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2014. Matul’s practice is centered on abstraction, spanning paintings and works on paper that move between spare, minimal structures and more gestural, expressive passages. His compositions treat form not as description but as a way of directing the viewer’s attention, allowing motifs and associations to emerge through balance, rhythm, and surface. The work maintains a deliberately open visual language, grounded in the act of looking rather than narrative explanation.
