About Sonia Gechtoff
Sonia Gechtoff (1926–2018) was an American painter and printmaker associated with Abstract Expressionism in San Francisco and New York. Born in Philadelphia, she studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and moved to San Francisco in 1951. Her work turned toward abstraction in 1952, and she became part of the Bay Area’s postwar avant-garde, developing large gestural compositions.
Gechtoff appeared in the Guggenheim Museum’s Younger American Painters in 1954 and had her first Ferus Gallery solo exhibition in 1957. She moved to New York with her husband, artist James Kelly, in the late 1950s and continued painting, drawing, printmaking, and teaching. The Denver Art Museum included her in Women of Abstract Expressionism in 2016.
